When I was in high school I had a “friend” who time has proven to have been a self-righteous horrible hypocrite of the highest order. We were studying transcendentalism in American Literature.

I decided to read to her, over the phone, as we were talking about transcendentalism (truly), the first couple pages of Galt’s Speech. I asked her what she thought, since she liked the transcendentalists. She said she would agree with most of it and liked the spirit.

I told her what it was. You would’ve thought I had physically assaulted her by her reaction. I knew she didn’t like Ayn Rand, but it turns out it’s because she was told that reading or listening to her work was, well, against God’s “boundaries” as they might say today,
