I remember pretty well, about 12 – 16 years ago, being hospitalized in-patient against my will multiple times. I've repeatedly been shown old-school style assertiveness training videos in an effort to stop vulnerable people from being abused.

The most important advice I think everyone can follow is boundaries. When presented to me in approximately 2003, nobody outside of group therapy was talking about 'triggers' and 'boundaries' at any great length in everyday discourse.

The idea of the boundary was presented as a way to take ownership of yourself, your thoughts, your responsibilities, your emotions, and your desires from those who need all those things to be theirs. It was a way to eliminate guilt while still being 'altruistic' ?, and it has helped many people.
